Our God is MIGHTY TO SAVE!
Today was a day of great news! First, at my appointment with Dr. Rensimer (infectious disease genius), he was quite impressed with how my blood has been looking. The lab took four more weekly viles to test, so on Wednesday (depending on the results) we could possibly get the PICC line out!!!! I am definitely praying for God's mighty power to heal beyond medical reasoning to be seen through the blood results on Wednesday. I will certainly let you know what happens.
After Dr. Rensimer, it was time for my 34-week pre-natal visit with Dr. Levin. She said she was impressed with how good I looked (compared to the sickly, pale person she has been seeing in her office). Malachi's heart was beating the strongest I've heard it beat! We get to see our little monkey in two more (LONG) weeks to check on his position and weight. His daddy went out of town Saturday but gets back tomorrow night!! Yay!! I really think Malachi knows Steve is gone...it's weird, I know, but trust me. He seems different when he's not "showing off" for his daddy.
More great news...Burlington Coat Factory had to special order the RainForest Pack 'N Play for me from Arizona and it came in today!! You don't understand, but the RainForest Pack 'N Play is IMPOSSIBLE to find!! So my mom and I went to pick it up today and when they were ringing me up, it turns out that all the RainForest items were 15% off!! I LOVE SECRET SALES!!
God is incredible and I can't wait to see what He is going to do on Wednesday!
Truly unworthy,
Molly, Steve, and the little Malachi monkey

I woke up in a puddle...
Here's my gnarly skin infection...yummy!
It is good that it's draining as opposed to just sitting and festering in there, but as long as it's draining that means there's still definitely an infection there. He really wants to do an MRI to look at the bone and decide about surgery b/c he thinks that the medicine just can't penetrate the deep pockets of infection in the bone. The MRI would show how damaged the bone is, if surgery is needed, how badly surgery is needed, and whether they would remove the bone or just puncture it and drain it. Of course the urgency of the MRI is put on hold for my sweet little man inside of me...he's still quite squishy in the middle so he's not quite ready to come out of the oven.
I do get to play CSI, though. He gave me a specimen collection kit and taught me how to do it at home. I have to wait until I can feel the puss draining and then poke it with a sterile swab and refrigerate it. Cool, huh? (Cool to me...I have to find humor in it or else I would be sad!) :)
Move over, Gil Grissom, I am the new CSI!
Silliness aside, he did explain that with other infections, surgery is rarely an option. That said, mastoiditis is a tricky and frustrating bugger. It can get really ugly really fast and "the odds are against me when it comes to not needing surgery" (his explanation). So today I'm slightly bummed at the prospect of adding yet another surgery to my resume, but I'm just praying for God's hand to do whatever it takes to leave Malachi inside his incubator as long as possible and for the doctors to do whatever they need to in order to conquer this infection! My God is mighty to save!

Molly

Back to work?! Nope, just kidding!
So there it is, folks. (That's about how I look, too! Haha!)
I will see Dr. Rensimer again Thursday and get my new SED rate and other labs back. I will keep you updated so check back then! Until Thursday, there's not all that much going on concerning Malachi. I will say that it has been a Godsend being off the past two weeks because I have gotten to really spend some valuable quality time with my incredible husband who I really miss getting to see whenever I want. It was a tough first week that beat my body up pretty badly, but my energy is returning and I am trying to regain some normalcy. Until Thursday, farewell!

A Case of the Mondays?! No Way!
Here's me...just enjoying my PICC line. Good times.
Really, though...God is doing amazing things right now. We have hit some pretty hard financial times and it seems from the outside looking in that the timing couldn't be worse, but I can just picture God sitting on His incredible throne just smiling because "for such a time as this" is what He saw fit. He will work His miracles...we just have to be patient enough to appreciate them.
I had another promising visit at the doctor today! Dr. Rensimer (infectious disease genius) poked and prodded all over my mastoid bone and I BARELY felt any pain!! God is so good!!! The fact that the pain is almost completely gone is some preliminary proof that the antibiotics are doing their job! Praise God!
He took more blood today and we will discuss the results on Thursday. My SED rate (something in your blood that red flags inflammation) was way above normal as of last week. Normal for someone my age would be below 10, but my SED rate was a whopping 69! Ouch! He said that your SED rate naturally raises when you're pregnant, but a number that high was not normal so something is obviously going on in there. We're all praying that those numbers are down on Thursday!
He also said that I will need to be on the IV antibiotics "for awhile". "Awhile" in his terms means at least a month. I'm praying that I figure out a way so I can return to work as soon as I'm able. It's killing me knowing I'm already on medical leave (when I needed to save all 12 weeks for Malachi's arrival). But, like I said before, God certainly knows what He's doing and it will all make perfect sense one day. My impression from Dr. Rensimer was that after Malachi is born, they will do a CAT scan to see what damage has been caused to the bone and then decide if surgery is needed. He said that with an infection like this one in a "spongey" bone like the mastoid, antibiotics can only go so far and sometimes surgery is required after an aggressive course of drugs has been given. We will see what develops. I am BEYOND glad that I am far enough along that a) nothing is messin' with Malachi and b) he will be here sooner than later so we will have our end result from all of this soon enough. I actually get two days without doctors this week so I will busy myself with resting and doing various baby things!! I see Dr. Rensimer again on Thursday and I will certainly post my results from my blood work. Keep the prayers coming...and the holy pot pie, Steve Sapaugh!
Remember...Malachi remains untouched and well accounted for!

Molly

Whew...what a week!
Dr. Rensimer (Infectious Disease genius) was very thorough and really took time and put in energy to developing a treatment plan for me. He said that I will be on IV antibiotics every eight hours (they take one hour to infuse) for at least two weeks. Dr. Morgan (ENT) was hopeful that he won't have to do any kind of surgery on me! The pain is definitely still there, but I think I am beginning to notice a difference with these super drugs. Praise God!
This is my second IV. The first one didn't last long.
It's like really weird arm necklaces.
Anyways, I will be seeing Dr. Rensimer every Monday for blood work and to pick up more antibiotics and every Thursday to get the results of the labs and to pick up even more antibiotics. I see him in 45 minutes today so I need to go figure out how to shower with my new arm jewelry. I will keep you posted on all the happenings.
In case you're wondering, my baby shower is definitely still on at the Abdo's house for this Satuday! I need a pick-me-up and baby things always do the trick! :)

Mastoid-WHAT-is??
Isn't it pretty?!
I got to see my OB yesterday too which is always reassuring. She has been in close communication with Dr. Morgan to make sure myself and my Malachi are doing the best we can through all of this. The really amazing thing is, here's where God's grace is astounding...
Through all of this happening to me and my body, God is sparing Malachi any consequences. His heartbeat, position, size, and overall well-being was perfect at yesterday's visit! It is absolutely amazing to me that so much can be going on in my body but that Malachi remains unaffected. My OB called him "oblivious"....haha.
The big decision of the day is whether or not I will get a PICC line put in instead of my IV. A PICC line is inserted into your arm and threaded up through your arm into your subclavian vein. This sounds drastic, but unlike an IV, a PICC line can stay in the entire time I'm on these injections. Which, by the way, could be anywhere from 10-20 days. With an IV, I have to go the Infusion place and get a new IV started every 2-3 days because your little arm veins just can't handle more than a couple days. With a PICC, it could stay in for the duration, can't get pulled out (they stitch it in place), and has less chance of infection than an IV. However, with a PICC they would probably have to put me on Heprin which is a blood thinner. My OB said she was fine with a PICC (and would prefer it) if it wasn't for the Heprin. Just on the sheer chance anything were to happen like a car wreck or early labor or something, I could bleed out if I was on blood thinners. So, the nurse from the Infusion place called me last night to check on me and said there is actually a way to do a PICC without using Heprin. I see Dr. Morgan this morning at 10:30 so I will just have to wait and see what he and my OB (Dr. Levin) decided to do.
If getting poked and prodded every few days is safer for my little man inside, then that is a small cross to bear to keep him safe.
Please, if you will, don't take this post as a pity party in any way. I just wanted to keep you all in the loop of what is happening with Malachi (and his incubator). Please pray that God continues to show off in this situation. It is my understanding that as long as I have an active IV, I can't work (which cuts into not only my small paycheck but also the time I can take for maternity). It is also my understanding that this infection is hard to treat because it is so far deep into the bone and takes a long-term course of antibiotics. Some cases require surgery, but we will cross that bridge if it comes (preferably after February 6th!). God has something amazing up His sleeve through all of this and I am glad I have a front-row seat to see what happens. Please pray for His continued healing as I deal with the pain and discomfort as well as His incredible hands to remain around Malachi.
I will update you after the doctor today. Thank you for joining us on this roller coaster.

Molly

A Night at the Hospital...
God truly is good.
I have had some serious nausea the past four days (including throwing up Thanksgiving morning...yum!). I was worried that I may be getting Third Trimester morning sickness. But, when I woke up yesterday morning after sleeping 13 hours and still feeling like I couldn't get out of bed, I had a fever, and I was throwing up again...I knew it was something else. My lower abdomen was cramping like it hasn't cramped since before I was pregnant and some of the discomfort wrapped around to my lower back. I thought I just had some tummy troubles. My friend Jamie recommended I call my OB to make sure it wasn't something else.
I called Dr. Levin's answering service last night and literally within a minute, I was on the phone with her! (Reassuring!) She had me describe what was going on and she advised me to go ahead and go to Labor and Delivery at my hospital to make sure I wasn't having contractions. Hearing the words "Labor and Delivery" is NOT something that a 30-week pregnant woman wants to hear! After a slight freak-out moment (what did I do wrong? what's going on? what if...?) I called Steve who turned his car around immediately and took me to the hospital. (I spoiled his Spurs vs. Rockets evening...sorry, love!)
We got to the hospital and in no time they had me hooked up to monitors--one to monitor Malachi's heart rate and one to monitor contractions. It turns out that I was in fact having contractions but I wasn't in labor. Praise God!! My doctor said that I must have a stomach virus and was dehydrated from that. Sometimes with a stomach virus and all the things that go on from that inside your stomach, your body responds by having contractions. I wasn't in labor or anything, praise the Lord, but at least now I know what contractions feel like (for when it really is time). They were going to keep me overnight for observation but because Malachi was so active (he wouldn't stop showing off for them), they said he was unaffected by my virus and the contractons. Yay, Malachi! She sent me home to rest, drink gallons upon gallons of Gatorade, and keep watching my little man move and groove. I see her for my 30-week appointment on Monday so I will keep you posted from there.
I must say that my wonderful husband was amazing yet again and didn't complain once about how we had to spend our Saturday night. He was supportive and encouraging the entire time and made me feel like nothing was going to go wrong. Thank you, Steve. I love you more than you realize.

Diabetes...or no Diabetes...that is the question!
Well, all of the results are in from my Gestational Diabetes test and everything looks great! Anything over 180 would be questionable for little Malachi, but my blood came back in at a nice 72. No worries here...bring on the pie at Thanksgiving!!
This time last year, I was working on losing 40 pounds so Thanksgiving didn't have as exciting a ring to it. When I realized I would be pregnant at Thanksgiving, I got really excited. Finally...I can completely gorge myself and have a great excuse to!! Unfortunately, my plan has not played out as I had envisioned it. As Mr. Malachi continues to take up more and more room in my body, that leaves less and less room for me to fill it up with food. So, this year I will simply eat until he's full...and lucky for me, he is hungry again in a few hours!! :)
I hope you all have an extremely fantastic Thanksgiving and find more in your life to be thankful for this year than last. I know the easy answer for me is "Malachi!", but I think above that, I am thankful for and completely astounded by God's faithfulness over the past year (and that, of course, includes my little Malachi). So enjoy the turkey, dressing, and ungodly amounts of pie!

28 Weeks and Getting Closer...
20 weeks
24 weeks
and now, 28 weeks!
Today also marked the point where I begin seeing the doctor every other week (WHICH IS EXCITING!!). It's as if I'm ACTUALLY having a baby soon....haha. Thanks again for wanting to ride along side of us during this process! We hope that this blog makes you feel a part!

We're getting closer...
Well, according to all the books I'm currently reading, Malachi entered his third and final trimester last week and weighs around 2 1/2 pounds. As of today (Saturday), I am 28 weeks along!! I can't believe it's been 28 weeks already! The first trimester was sickly and a tad miserable at times so it went by incredibly slow. The second trimester just passed me by! If this is how fast the third goes, he will be here before the paint in his room is dry!
We go back to Dr. Levin Monday morning for the infamous Gestational Diabetes Test. Yay! I get to drink the lovely concoction of sugar my doctor has prepared for me! :) (Can you sense the sarcasm?!) Joking aside, I am very glad that they have the tests they do now so that possible complications can be avoided. I will update the blog as soon as we get the test results back from the doctor. Oh, I will also be posting the comparison photos (20 weeks, 24 weeks, 28 weeks...)
I must say that I honestly don't know how people go through pregnancy and don't believe in God. The sheer fact that all of these intricate details MUST fall into place in order for this beautiful baby to even exist is proof enough for me. Also, the faith it takes to trust that "The Lord will fulfill His purpose" for the life inside of me has been truly humbling. Seeing the beauty of such a loving God fleshed out in such a tangible way is truly amazing and my honor to (literally) carry it. I pray with confidence now like never before and I honestly feel that it is due to Malachi. He has taught me so much about my relationship with God that I can't even begin to describe it. I pray that this is God's purpose for the rest of his life--and He will fulfill it!
